How do we measure success?

Operational Excellence encompasses more than 30 performance standards in the operational areas of our business. These standards enable us to operate safely, produce less waste, use fewer raw materials and work more efficiently. Among these performance standards are the following:

  • Occupational and process-safety performance
  • Environmental performance
  • Reliability
  • Leading indicators
  • Audits and assessments

Management System Expectations

The frame work and basic requirements of our Operational Excellence system are defined by the Management System Expectations. These expectations consist of nine elements and 40 specific expectations and are supported by 30 performance standards.

The system is designed to be simple, proactive and focused on the critical items that deliver the most value. Our approach is to have practical and achievable requirements and expect full compliance throughout the business.

Assessing our performance

To ensure that HSE standards are appropriately implemented and maintained, manufacturing sites are assessed against the Operational Excellence standards. The audit group, acting independently of the business line management, present and review their findings with senior management and follow up on close out items.

In 2010, we conducted 22 Operational Excellence audits within our facilities.
